Meena’s Story

Meena

is a nineteen year old. Her mother was trafficked from West Bengal and sold into the sex trade in Mumbai. As a child, Meena lived with her mother and brother, in a brothel, in the Falkland Road red light area.

When Meena was three, she was put in a night care centre because her mother wanted her to be safe and educated. Being a part of the sex trade, she was scared that her daughter would be exposed to its harsh realities, and tried her best to keep her away.

At five, with the help of social workers, she was admitted to the Naunihal Shelter Home, and lived there till she was eighteen, along with other girls who were saved from the heinous trade, and from going missing.

Meena, after experiencing the harrowing process of constantly being in different places, feels that children should not be kept in shelter homes or night care centres, just because the outside world is unsafe for them. She wants everybody to work together to make this world a safe place, so that everyone can live peacefully and freely.

She didn’t have the privilege of living a carefree life when she was a child, and she hopes she can create that, for all the children who are in the same situation, as she once was in. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in the Arts under Social Work. We are proud of her and all the initiatives she plans to work on, in the future.
