Michaela’s Story

Michaela,

was already an adult when she was taken. She was a single parent in her thirties, who had lost her job and was staying with a few friends.

She then came across a man who was very sympathetic of her condition. They grew familiar with each other and he treated her well. Trusting him in a state of utter desperation, and the gnawing need to have a man take care of her, she believe all his false promises and finally felt content. She was lonely; she needed companionship and love; the two things that led her to move in with him. This turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes of her life.

Before she knew it, he had coerced her to take up a job at a massage parlour, and within a few days, she discovered that it was a front, for a mob­-run prostitution ring. But it was too late by then, she was trapped.

When she resisted, her pimp put up lewd comments and photographs of her on social media. Since getting on social media is so easy for everyone, her kids and family saw it before she was able to get it pulled down. Everyone was hurt, confused and scared for her. Her pictures were in 11 states and 26 cities. She was ashamed and didn’t have the courage to face anyone. She believed that this was her life and she would just have to live with it. Soon after all of this, a client offered to help her out by hiding her. She jumped at this offer instantly. The pimp did eventually come looking for her, but didn’t succeed. She never left the client’s house and went directly to the FBI.

Talking about the trauma she experienced, she says, “You don’t ever really go back to living normally. This changes you forever. But I am strong; by having so many survivors in my life, my life is honest and genuine and I can tell the truth and not be abused for the first time ever, really.”
