Naina’s Story

Naina,

Naina (name changed) is a young woman in her mid-twenties with light brown eyes. When you meet her for the first time, they strike right at you overwhelmingly, even though she avoids eye contact with a shy, contagious smile.

Naina, was a naive sixteen-year-old who was tricked into ‘love’ by a man and thus, she eloped with him. He showered her with fancy promises of commitment, and they got married. He planned on taking her for their honeymoon to New Delhi. Little did she know, that he was going to sell her into the trade of sex trafficking in G.B. Road – one of the most bustling red-light districts within India’s capital.

After an entire year of hell,

she managed to call up her family, and speak of her whereabouts. When asked about the entire duration for which she was missing, her mother responded: “I have cried a lot. When a girl gets trafficked the mother and father suffer the most. Everything stopped – my eating and sleeping. I only remember worrying.”

After her phone call, the family approached Shakti (name changed) who was able to rescue Naina with the help of the police on G.B. Road. She was immediately kept in the Child Welfare Committee for rehabilitation and then restored to her parents after a few months.

Furthermore, Shakti helped her in establishing her tailoring workspace with the required equipment. MISSING supported her and helped her business boom considerably. Naina’s parents speak proudly of her accomplishments and the increasing number of clients!

When asked to  explain the source of her positive energy, Naina says “Work is God. If I didn’t have my work, I think I would have gone mad.” These are the words of a trafficking survivor who is the bread-earner of her family and she stands proudly on her own feet.

This is Naina’s message, who has studied till the 7th Grade herself, to all our changemakers:

If girls are educated well, there can be nothing that is more empowering for them!”
